About Chile's time
3 time zones.
Chile stretches across four time zones, spanning from UTC-6 to UTC-3, with most of the mainland in UTC-4. The country has a complicated relationship with daylight saving time, and decisions around it sometimes last only a single year.

History
How Chile keeps time.
Chile's standard time has undergone multiple significant changes throughout its history. Before 1915, local mean time was used across the country, with cities setting clocks independently based on their longitude. In 1916, Chile first adopted a standardized time system, setting the mainland to UTC-4:42:46, still a distinctive local offset.
A major reform came in 1968 when the entire country was unified under a single time zone — UTC-4 — eliminating most regional variations for simplicity. However, this came at the cost of significant solar misalignment, particularly in western Patagonia, where the sun could rise well past 10 AM in winter.
The issue of daylight savings has been particularly turbulent. Between 2015 and 2016, Chile experimented with permanent DST (UTC-3 year-round), abandoning the winter change entirely. The public backlash was strong — children were waiting for school buses in near total darkness during winter, and productivity metrics suffered. Chile reverted to standard time in May 2016. Since then, the government has made frequent one-year-at-a-time decisions about DST schedules, rather than establishing a permanent rule.
In 2018, the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region (approximately UTC-3) stopped observing DST and permanently adopted UTC-3 year-round, making it a de facto permanent daylight-savings zone. In 2022, the government also split Easter Island and the mainland into distinct zones, giving Easter Island its own UTC-6 zone (America/Easter) separate from the mainland — a recognition of its geographic reality roughly 3,700 km west in the Pacific.

Things about Chile's time.
Chile's timezone situation is one of the most administratively volatile in South America. The government has frequently changed DST start and end dates on short notice, sometimes switching them within the same calendar year. Emergency extensions of DST have been declared in response to droughts and energy crises, adding to the confusion.
Geographically, mainland Chile is a narrow north-south strip, yet its 2012 decision to split the southern Coyhaique region (Aysén) into its own UTC-6 zone — and later splitting Punta Arenas and Magallanes into UTC-3 — reflects the country's struggle to balance solar time, administration, and regional identity. The Magallanes region has one of the most extreme solar schedules in the inhabited world: in midsummer, the sun may not set until after 11 PM.
Easter Island (Rapa Nui), despite being part of Chile and located deep in the Pacific, for decades shared the mainland's time zones. It wasn't until 2022 that it was formally given its own dedicated zone, UTC-6, a move long advocated by residents and supported by the fact the island sits roughly 2 hours behind the mainland solar time.
A notable consequence of Chile's frequent DST schedule changes is that international software companies and calendar apps have occasionally failed to update in time, causing meetings to be missed and flights miscalculated. Chile's timezone status is tracked closely by the IANA time zone database maintainers, who have had to issue emergency database updates multiple times.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Chile's time zone, daylight saving rules, and how to handle it in software. Can't find what you need? Email [email protected].
- What is the current time in Santiago, Chile?
- Santiago uses America/Santiago, currently UTC-4 during standard time and UTC-3 during daylight saving time. The mainland transitions twice a year, though the exact dates change annually by government decree.
- Does Chile observe daylight saving time?
- Yes, in most of the mainland, including Santiago and Coyhaique. However, the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region (UTC-3) does not observe DST and stays on UTC-3 year-round. Easter Island also does not observe DST, remaining on UTC-6. Mainland DST dates are set by the government and often announced on short notice.
- Why does Magallanes stay on UTC-3 permanently?
- The Magallanes region, in extreme southern Chile, makes permanent DST practical because of its already very long summer days. Switching back to UTC-4 in winter would push sunrise much later, with winter sunrises already occurring very late. The region voted to adopt permanent UTC-3 in 2018, and the government made it official.
- Is Easter Island in a different timezone from mainland Chile?
- Yes. Since 2022, Easter Island has its own dedicated timezone, America/Easter, at UTC-6 — roughly two hours behind Santiago. Before 2022, Easter Island followed the mainland's time zones, which caused significant misalignment with local solar time on the island.
- Why were Coyhaique and Punta Arenas given separate timezones?
- In 2012, Chile's Aysén (Coyhaique) region was split from Santiago and placed permanently on UTC-4, though it was later adjusted. In contrast, Magallanes (Punta Arenas) was moved to UTC-3 permanently in 2018. These changes were driven by extreme solar time differences — in winter, sunrise in Punta Arenas can occur past 10 AM if following UTC-4, which disrupted daily life.
- How far ahead or behind is Chile compared to the US East Coast?
- When both regions are on standard time, Chile (UTC-4) is about an hour ahead of US Eastern Time (UTC-5). However, because DST schedules are not synchronized, for brief periods during transitions, Chile can be hours ahead or behind, depending on which zone and whether DST is active. Always verify with the current date.
- What is the westernmost timezone in Chile?
- Easter Island, at UTC-6, is the westernmost timezone in Chile, both geographically and by clock time. The rest of the Chile territories range from UTC-3 to UTC-6, with Easter Island holding the westernmost position in the Pacific.
- Has Chile ever abolished DST permanently?
- Chile tried to extend DST to be permanent in 2015 and 2016, effectively keeping UTC-3 year-round. The experiment was abandoned after one year due to public pressure — dark winter mornings caused problems for schoolchildren and commuter safety. Chile reverted to seasonal changes, though schedules remain unpredictable and announced yearly.
