History
How Falkland Islands keeps time.
The Falkland Islands adopted Falkland Islands Time (UTC−03:00) in 1968 through the *Falkland Islands Interpretation and Common Ordinance (No. 4) 1968*. Before that, the islands used various local arrangements tied to solar time (~UTC−03:50). In 1983, Argentina's occupation briefly imposed Argentine time (UTC−03:00), but the post-conflict administration reverted to UTC−03:00 under British ordinance. In 2010, the *Time Ordinance 2010* confirmed UTC−03:00 as standard and introduced daylight saving time (UTC−02:00) between September and April. After several years of confusion and complaints from farmers and outdoor workers, the Falkland Islands Government abolished DST in 2016 via the *Time (Amendment) Ordinance 2016*, returning permanently to UTC−03:00.
Did you know?
Things about Falkland Islands's time.
Despite being located around 51°–53°W (which geographically aligns closer to UTC−03:00/UTC−04:00), the Falklands’ choice of UTC−03:00 keeps clock time reasonably close to solar noon only in the western islands, while in the eastern islands, noon occurs well before 12:00 on the clock. In practice, daily life runs on standard island time regardless of this slight mismatch.
Normally, such a small population and territory might be expected to coordinate closely with South America's Buenos Aires (now UTC−03:00). However, the Falklands' use of UTC−03:00 since 1968 (and confirmed in 2016) means no DST adjustments are needed when trading or communicating with other southern Atlantic partners, simplifying logistics. Tourists from any country also appreciate the lack of clock changes during their visits.

- What time zone is the Falkland Islands in?
- The Falkland Islands are in Atlantic/Stanley, which is UTC−03:00 year-round.
- Does the Falkland Islands observe daylight saving time?
- No. Since 2016, the Falkland Islands have not observed daylight saving time and remain on UTC−03:00 permanently.
- What is the time difference between the Falkland Islands and London during British Summer Time?

- What is the time difference with Argentina?
- Argentina uses UTC−03:00 year-round (without DST in much of the mainland), so when both territories are on standard time, there is zero time difference. However, when Argentina was briefly on DST in some historic periods, or in regions momentarily out of sync, minor temporary differences may have occurred. Since early 2009, Argentina has not observed DST in most of the mainland and uses UTC−03:00, aligning with Stanley time.
- Will I need to adjust my watch when visiting?
- No daylight saving adjustments are needed in the Stanley time zone, so once you set your watch to UTC−03:00, no changes are required.
- Does local time match the solar day?
- In the western Falklands (closer to 60°W), clock time roughly matches solar noon; in the eastern islands (~57°W), true solar noon tends to occur somewhat earlier than 12:00 on the clock, but daily life follows standard time regardless.
