About Fiji's time
A single time zone.

History
How Fiji keeps time.
When standardized time was introduced in Fiji during the colonial era, the territory adopted local mean time based on its geographic longitude, which loosely approximated what would later become UTC+12.
In 1899, Fiji began using an offset very close to UTC+12, formalizing its position in the global time system. By the time modern timezone databases (such as the IANA Time Zone Database) were being created, Fijiās standard offset was firmly established as UTC+12:00.
Fiji briefly experimented with daylight saving time in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. DST was introduced in 1998 as Fiji Summer Time, typically moving clocks to UTC+13. The practice was intermittent and eventually discontinued; after several tweaks and suspensions in the early 2000s and 2010s, Fiji has returned to using a fixed UTC+12:00 all year.
Because Fiji lies near the 180° meridian and the kinked International Date Line, its single timezone location on the western side of the line helps keep the country firmly in ātomorrowā in global terms, often making Fiji one of the first places to greet each new day (alongside nearby Pacific neighbors).
Did you know?
Things about Fiji's time.
Fijiās position near the International Date Line means it is among the first inhabited places to experience sunrise on a new calendar day. This has led to events such as the Millennium celebrations in 1900 and 2000, when Fiji marketed itself as one of the first countries to see the new year or new millennium.
Although Fiji has only one official timezone (Pacific/Fiji), the country is an archipelago spread over a substantial area of the South Pacific. Local solar time differs slightly between western and eastern islands, but the entire nationāincluding outlying island groupsāshares the same clock time.
For many years Fiji experimented with daylight saving to extend evening daylight in the summer and to support tourism and business alignment with trading partners. However, the benefits were limited and the practice was inconsistent, so Fiji ultimately reverted to standard UTC+12 year-round.
In global scheduling, Fijiās time often surprises people: when it is 9:00 AM Monday in Fiji (UTC+12), it is still Sunday in much of the Americas. This ādate jumpā effect is important for travelers and for anyone coordinating international meetings with Fiji.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Fiji's time zone, daylight saving rules, and how to handle it in software. Can't find what you need? Email [email protected].
- What timezone is Fiji in?
- Fiji uses Fiji Time, which is UTC+12:00 year-round under the IANA zone 'Pacific/Fiji'. Fiji no longer observes daylight saving time.
- Does Fiji observe daylight saving time?
- Fiji does not currently observe daylight saving time. It briefly used daylight saving (Fiji Summer Time, UTC+13) in some recent decades, but this has been discontinued.
- How many timezones does Fiji have?
- Fiji has one timezone for the entire country. All islands, including the main islands and remote groups, use the same UTC+12:00 offset.
- How does Fijiās timezone compare to other countries?
- Fiji is 12 hours ahead of UTC. That means Fiji is several hours ahead of Australia and New Zealand (outside their DST periods) and far ahead of the Americas and Europe.
- What time is it in Fiji when itās midday in UTC?
- When it is 12:00 (noon) UTC, it is 00:00 (midnight) on the next calendar day in Fiji (UTC+12). So midday UTC equals midnight Fiji Time.
- How can I convert my local time to Fiji time?
- Add or subtract hours to convert UTC to Fiji Time (UTC+12). For example: - AEST (UTC+10) ā Fiji: +2 hours - NZST (UTC+12) ā Fiji: same hour - EST (UTC-5) ā Fiji: +17 hours (next day) Check if your country uses DST and adjust if needed.
- Why is Fiji often one of the first countries to enter a new day?
- Fiji is located just west of the kinked International Date Line, in UTC+12. This places it among the first major land areas to cross into a new calendar day, making it a symbolic āfirst to the futureā each midnight.
- What are good tools to track Fiji time for calls or travel?
- World clock features on phones and computers, or websites/apps that show multiple time zones, are ideal. Add 'Pacific/Fiji' or manually set UTC+12 to keep track of the current time in Fiji.
