About Namibia's time

A single time zone.

Namibia uses a single timezone (CAT, UTC+2) year-round, having switched from observing daylight saving time in 2017 to keep things simple.

History

How Namibia keeps time.

When Namibia gained independence from South Africa on March 21, 1990, it inherited South Africa Standard Time (UTC+2) as its timezone. For the next 27 years, the country observed daylight saving time, moving clocks forward to UTC+3 during summer months (typically from the first Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April), keeping pace with neighboring South Africa.

The DST arrangement caused ongoing confusion, particularly along Namibia's borders. The Caprivi Strip in the northeast borders countries on UTC+2 without DST, and the Far North and Kavango regions shared time with neighboring Angola and Zambia, which don't observe daylight saving time. This created a patchwork where small border communities could end up one hour out of sync with nearby areas just across the border.

On August 2, 2017, Namibia passed the Namibian Time Bill 2017, which officially abolished DST. The change took effect on September 3, 2017, and Namibia has remained on CAT (Central Africa Time, UTC+2) year-round ever since. The decision was motivated by practical considerations: simplifying scheduling, reducing confusion at borders, and aligning more closely with European trading partners (Europe's winter hours bring it closer to UTC+2). It also ended the headache of biannual clock changes that affected everything from school schedules to broadcast programming.

Did you know?

Things about Namibia's time.

Fact · 01

Namibia's geographic position is somewhat misaligned with its clock time. The country spans roughly 13° of longitude (from about 12°E to 25°E), meaning the sun rises and sets about an hour earlier in the east near Katima Mulilo than in the west near Lüderitz. Solar noon in Windhoek (at 17°E) occurs around 12:48 on the clock, while in Lüderitz (at 15°E) it's closer to 13:00 — both significantly later clock times than solar alignment would suggest, a result of fitting the entire country into one timezone.

Fact · 02

The 2017 abolition of DST was part of a broader regional shift. South Africa had already stopped observing DST in 1944, and most surrounding African countries never adopted it. Namibia's move reflected a growing recognition that DST provides minimal benefit in a country close to the equator, where daylight hours remain relatively constant year-round.

Fact · 03

For travelers, Namibia's UTC+2 alignment means it's one hour ahead of Western European Time (WET/WEST) and one hour behind most of Central Europe during their summer months. The country shares its timezone with South Africa, Botswana, Egypt, and several other African nations, making regional coordination straightforward.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Namibia's time zone, daylight saving rules, and how to handle it in software. Can't find what you need? Email [email protected].

Did Namibia always use UTC+2?
No. Before independence (pre-1990), as South West Africa under South African administration, it followed South Africa Standard Time (UTC+2) but observed South African DST (UTC+3 in summer). After independence, it kept the same arrangement until abolishing DST in 2017.
Why did Namibia abolish daylight saving time?
The government cited border confusion, scheduling difficulties, and minimal benefit near the equator as reasons. Moving clocks twice a year caused confusion in cross-border trade and daily life without meaningful energy savings, since Namibia's latitude means daylight hours barely change seasonally.
Is the entire country on the same time?
Yes. Since 2017, Namibia observes a single timezone (Africa/Windhoek, CAT/UTC+2) nationwide with no exceptions. This was not always practically true when DST was observed, as some border communities informally followed neighboring countries' time.
What countries share Namibia's timezone?
Namibia shares UTC+2 (CAT/SAST) year-round with South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Burundi, Rwanda, Egypt, Malawi, Eswatini, and Libya (among others). This makes regional coordination across southern Africa relatively seamless.
How does Namibia's time compare to South Africa?
Since 2017, Namibia and South Africa share the same time year-round — both are on UTC+2 and neither observes DST. Before 2017, Namibia followed South Africa's DST schedule, so they were also aligned during that period.
When did the DST abolition take effect?
The Namibian Time Bill was passed on August 2, 2017, and the first DST-free summer began on September 3, 2017. Before that, Namibia had observed DST every year since 1990 (and before that under South African administration).
