About Spain's time

2 time zones.

Spain operates across three time zones — most of the mainland follows Central European Time (UTC+1 / UTC+2 in summer), but the Canary Islands sit an hour behind at UTC+0 / UTC+1, and Ceuta and Melilla also follow the mainland zone while geographically closer to Morocco's time. Most Spaniards live an hour ahead of their solar time, a legacy of a wartime political decision that still shapes daily life.

History

How Spain keeps time.

## A wartime shift that stuck

Spain's clocks tell a story that started in 1940. Before then, the country used GMT+0 (UTC+0) — essentially the same as the UK and Portugal. In January 1940, Francisco Franco's regime moved Spain's clocks forward by one hour to align with Nazi Germany's time zone, a political gesture during World War II. The logic was symbolic: Spain was officially neutral, but Franco wanted to signal ideological alignment with the Axis powers.

Unlike many European countries, Spain never switched back after the war. The 1940 change became permanent, and the country has used Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) ever since. Over the decades, even as the Franco regime ended and democracy returned, no government seriously reversed the change. The time zone had become entrenched in business schedules, legal documents, and international agreements.

Spain adopted daylight saving time in 1974 (and in various forms before that), aligning with most of Europe. Today, the mainland switches to CEST (UTC+2) from late March to late October.

## Three zones, one country

Spain's three time zones reflect its geography and colonial past. The mainland, Balearic Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla use CET/CEST. The Canary Islands, however, follow WET/WEST (UTC+0 / UTC+1), matching their Atlantic position and their closer solar alignment. The mostly uninhabited territories like the Plazas de soberanía also follow the mainland zone.

Did you know?

Things about Spain's time.

Fact · 01

## Living an hour ahead of the sun

Fact · 02

Most of mainland Spain sits at a longitude that naturally fits UTC+0 (like London or Lisbon), yet it observes UTC+1 (and UTC+2 in summer). This means the sun rises and sets about an hour later than people in comparable latitudes. Solar noon in Madrid is around 1:15 PM in winter and 2:15 PM in late summer — one of the most pronounced misalignments in Europe.

Fact · 03

This creates a distinctive Spanish schedule. Lunch is typically 2–3:30 PM, dinner rarely before 9 PM, and prime-time TV starts around 10:30 PM. Critics argue the time zone contributes to shorter sleep and lower productivity compared to neighbors. Proposals to switch back to UTC+0 surface periodically but never gain enough political momentum.

Fact · 04

## The Canaries keep their own rhythm

Fact · 05

The Canary Islands sit off the coast of Morocco and follow Western European Time. They are one hour behind the mainland, which makes scheduling between the islands and Madrid a common source of confusion for businesses and travelers. When it's noon in Madrid, it's 11 AM in the Canaries.

Fact · 06

## Ceuta and Melilla: small, but keen

Fact · 07

Ceuta and Melilla, Spain's enclaves in North Africa, follow CET/CEST like the mainland, creating a stark contrast with neighboring Morocco, which uses UTC+0 (or UTC+1 in summer, though Morocco alternates more recently). This means Moroccan residents near the border effectively jump two hours in summer when crossing into Spanish territory and back again when returning.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Spain's time zone, daylight saving rules, and how to handle it in software. Can't find what you need? Email [email protected].

How many time zones does Spain have?
Spain has three: Central European Time (CET/UTC+1) for the mainland, Balearic Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla; and Western European Time (WET/UTC+0) for the Canary Islands — plus daylight saving variants in each.
Does Spain observe daylight saving time?
Yes. Mainland Spain, Ceuta, and Melilla switch to CEST (UTC+2) from late March to late October. The Canary Islands switch to WEST (UTC+1) in the same period.
Why is Spain in CET when it's geographically closer to UTC+0?
Spain adopted CET in 1940 when Franco's regime aligned clocks with Nazi Germany. The change was never reversed, and Spain has stayed in CET ever since.
What's the time difference between mainland Spain and the Canary Islands?
The Canary Islands are one hour behind mainland Spain year-round. When it's noon in Madrid, it's 11 AM in the Canaries.
How does Spain's time zone affect daily life?
Because clocks are set ahead of solar time, Spaniards tend to eat lunch around 2–3:30 PM and dinner after 9 PM. Prime-time TV often starts at 10:30 PM, and many argue the misalignment contributes to shorter sleep and lower productivity.
Has Spain ever considered changing back to UTC+0?
Proposals surface periodically, especially after studies linking the time zone to sleep deprivation and low productivity. But no government has seriously pursued a switch, as businesses, legal frameworks, and international coordination are deeply tied to CET.
Is Ceuta in the same time zone as Morocco?
No. Ceuta and Melilla follow CET/CEST like mainland Spain, while Morocco uses UTC+0 (with occasional summer adjustments). This creates a two-hour difference in summer between the Spanish enclaves and neighboring Morocco.
What time zone do the Balearic Islands use?
The Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera) follow the same CET/CEST schedule as mainland Spain.
